![]() His years of dedication at the Columbus Zoo has made the zoo a landmark, with ample revenue to provide animals with the best care and facilities. He also started providing educational and entertaining events at the zoo, increasing the attendance exponentially with time. When the primates first touched the grass and began to play, Hanna states it was one of the best moments in his career. Seeing that the gorillas were kept inside, unlike their familiar open habitat, he opted to create a more natural space for them outside. He made immediate changes to the outdated zoo, starting with the small animal enclosures. In 1978, Hanna became Director of the Columbus Zoo. While he ran his store, Hanna also directed a zoo in Florida until their family decided to move to Columbus, Ohio for a job opportunity. His passion for animals was always apparent, from his first job cleaning animal cages at a mere eleven years old. He opened a pet shop and petting zoo with his wife, Suzi. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Hanna obtained his bachelor’s degree in business- and then started his own. A true naturalist, with an innate sense of adventure, Hanna charms animals and humans alike with his knowledge and compassion. Hanna was known for his live animal demonstrations on talk shows and his TV shows “Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures,” “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild” and “Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown.” He served as a spokesperson for the zoo until June 2020 before retiring. Hanna was the director of the Columbus Zoo from 1978 to 1992 and he currently serves as the director emeritus. “Sadly, Dad is no longer able to participate in public life as he used to, where people all over the world watched, learned and laughed alongside me.” “His condition has progressed much faster in the last few months than any of us could have anticipated,” his daughters said in a Twitter statement. “Jungle” Jack Hanna of the Columbus Zoo was diagnosed with dementia and possibly Alzheimer’s disease and will be stepping away from the public, according to a letter from the Hanna family Wednesday.
